THE FIRST AVAILABLE TRAIN

Outside Bruno’s workshop. The poppies in flower in the cracks in the asphalt. Yellow and orange. Not the sort that flower everywhere.

They were special poppies.

Strange poppies.

Favourite poppies.

She looked through the window again, saw Bruno sitting at his workbench. Now he was definitely old.

‘Do what you want,’ he’d always said to her, and she thought: OK, I will.

She laid her hand on the window, Bruno turned around and smiled at her, she took her hand away again and smiled back, and then she went.

Down Buntentorsteinweg to Leibnizplatz.

Past the school.

She found it hard to walk because of the kicks to her belly and back the evening before, and also because of Nouri.

But she couldn’t take him with her, she could only take herself, that was hard enough as it was.

She got on the bus on the bridge.

She got off at the station and then she got on again, this time on the first available train.

And then she was finally gone.
